In this collaborative project, we cut out a human figure from a magazine, traced the outline of that figure onto a 4-folded piece of paper, and used a figure-ground relationship in which the figure (outline) was another image from a magazine, complimenting the ground (paint chips). What made this project interesting is that we work on other people's projects, so the end result was unpredictable. I found that working with complimentary colors and uncanny imagery was the most interesting, specifically seeing what other students used to make the image uncanny, and especially the end result of the exquisite corpse that I started (top image).
I found this to be a really interesting and experimental project, using techniques I would have never before thought of or ever used. I made sure to implement elements of action and an overall understanding of the body regardless of the heavy abstraction. What stands out the most to me in this piece is the shoe, joined by Jack's angled thigh and leg, as well as the picture of that leg's shadow beneath it. I had Jack change position from upright with both feet down to cross legged, and this made for a dynamic sequence of visual action. I do feel, overall, that the piece is a bit too bright to look at, with different pictures fighting, visually, for the focal point. There isn't a particular area in regards to contrast and color that really stands out as a sole focal point, and I think that's the major weakness of this piece from a critical standpoint. Although one may argue that the left side of Jack's face is the focal point given the brightness of his skin in that picture, but overall I feel the viewer may get lost and visually stressed.
Nonetheless, it was an enjoyable and fresh experience, and I learned a lot from the mistakes I made along the way. |
